Weekly Update - June 20, 2007

MAIN STREET UPDATE

ACCOMPLISHED

  • Sidewalks, asphalt, and curbs along the south side of Main Street were removed from Forest Street to the corner of Main and East streets.

  • Temporary pedestrian and vehicular access points were installed to maintain access to businesses on the south side.

  • A groundbreaking ceremony celebrating the beginning of the construction was held on Monday, June 18. More than 50 attended to hear Mayor Charlene Pelfrey, Northeast Chamber of Commerce President John Harris and Downtown Mason Association president Chet Mastalerz applaud the beginning of this phase of the revitalization.

  • On Monday, June 18, City Council approved the cost of moving overhead utilities underground. The city is in the process of contracting with the utilities to provide this service.

OUTLOOK FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS

  • Removal of curbs, sidewalks, and asphalt along the south side of Main will continue. Once workers reach Mason-Montgomery Road, they will begin the same process on the north side of Main.

  • Installation of storm sewers will begin later next week. This will take 2-3 weeks to complete and may cause some temporary traffic delays as materials are laid across Main Street.

SAFETY ISSUES

  • There was slight traffic confusion over the changing of North East Street and West North Street, both one way streets, to one way in the opposite direction. Mainline Construction adjusted signage to help prevent cars from resuming the normal traffic flow. Police are monitoring the situation to ensure traffic continues to flow smoothly.

MASON-MONTGOMERY ROAD UPDATE

ACCOMPLISHED

  • Portions of Mason-Montgomery Road were closed on June 18 and will be closed for the next several months.

  • Trees have been removed in preparation for removal of the houses on the east side of the street.

OUTLOOK FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS

  • The Mason Fire Department and neighboring departments will be conducting a live burn training exercise on Sunday, June 24, in conjunction with removing houses along the east side of Mason-Montgomery Road. Then the remaining houses will be removed in preparation for the road widening.
