Downtown Construction
Weekly Update - January 23, 2008
NOTES OF INTEREST:
- Fun Fact: With temperatures “bottoming out” at well below freezing for most of the month, the men and women working on the downtown Mason revitalization project struggle to keep themselves and their equipment warm. Mobile heaters are used in make-shift tents to prevent the water used by the saws from freezing. The saws are used to cut the paver bricks.
Most shifts begin early in the morning, before the sun begins to warm the air. Workers dress in multiple layers, covering all flesh exposed to the cold. Layers include wind-breaking, insulation, and sweat absorption, often with plastic between layers as a moisture barrier. Hard hats are insulated, gloves and socks are doubled, and workers consume a steady flow of coffee, hot liquids, and soups.
