Weekly Update - February 6, 2008
CONSTRUCTION NEWS:
- Installation work continued on the traffic signal at Reading Road and West Main Street.
- 2.Installation work continued on the streetlight wiring on Mason-Montgomery Road.
NOTES OF INTEREST:
- Due to the ongoing weather conditions, work will continue to be limited on the project for the next several weeks. Work on the traffic signal and street lighting will continue as weather allows.
- Fun Fact: The weather has many unpredictable factors that can affect crews and each phase of the construction process. Workers must face all elements of the weather. The conditions can be dangerous and sometimes deadly. In cases of extremely wet weather, construction may be halted to prevent injury. The following are some examples of how current rainy weather conditions hinder construction progress:
- Electricians working on lighting cannot work in wet conditions, as wiring and light fixtures should never be exposed to water. The potential for electrocution is very high.
- If it is raining heavily, concrete cannot dry properly, leaving it weak. These conditions are not ideal for pouring foundations as cracks or fractures may result.
- If the ground is too saturated with water, the land may settle unevenly or cause too much soil runoff from the construction site. Also, extremely wet conditions may cause heavy machinery to get stuck or cause deep ruts in the ground.
- During construction, the rain may also pose a threat to the materials being used. For this reason, construction may be postponed until the weather is more favorable.
