MASON CREATES COMMUNITY GARDEN PLOT

An idea that has been tossed about by Mason council members is coming to fruition after a resident agreed to lead the project.

Mason resident Norman Roemer visited Mason City Council early in April to present his ideas about a community vegetable garden. Mr. Roemer has agreed to organize a garden and has been working with the city to set land aside for gardeners to grow vegetables. His vision is to promote sharing and communication within the city. Gardeners are encouraged to donate any surplus vegetable to other families, seniors, or a community food bank. Mr. Roemer also urged service organizations and churches to plant a garden to help members of the various groups they serve.

Update: The City of Mason set aside garden plots on State Route 741 north of Bethany Road and did the initial plowing of the plots. Applications were accepted until May 15 from gardeners and groups interested in growing vegetables on a 10 by 15-foot area that is set aside for their use. Applications are no longer available as the garden has reached capacity.

Plots were assigned on May 15 after a blessing of the fields. Planting began that day and will continue until May 30. Other conditions were provided along with the application.

For further information please contact Norman Roemer at 826-0870. Gardeners were encouraged to reserve their plots early so Mr. Roemer could work with the city to be sure there was enough space prepared for all those who applied by May 15.
