Lightning Prediction System Installed at Heritage Oak Park

MYO Baseball and SAY Soccer have collaborated with the City of Mason to install a lightning prediction system at Mason’s Heritage Oak Park.

The system provides an indicator of possible lightning strikes through both an air horn and strobe lights. Since it is a prediction system and not a warning system, it will give an alert 8 to 20 minutes in advance of a potential strike in the area.

When the system detects electrical energy in the atmosphere, the air horn will sound a 15-second blast alerting people to take cover. This will be followed by activation of the strobe lights. When the threat has passed, the lights will turn off and an all-clear horn will emit a series of three short horn bursts.

The solar-powered predictor system was installed near the tennis courts at Heritage Oak Park. A sign with the information below has been posted in the park to let visitors know about this system to protect their safety.
