• At the start of school, City staff including Mason police and traffic engineers will monitor the flow of vehicle and pedestrian traffic and make adjustments as needed. 
• The City and Mason Schools have been working together in preparation for the start of the school year.

• The City remains mindful of the upcoming school year and intentionally built construction schedule with the students and parents in mind. 
• In July, the City extended lane closure hours to expedite construction work prior to the start of the school year.

As we move closer to the start of the new school year, we understand many parents and caregivers may feel anxious—new routines, new traffic patterns, and the energy of a new school year can make dropoff and pickup feel a bit stressful. The construction at the intersection of Mason Montgomery Road and Tylersville Road may be adding to the anxiety. The City and Mason Schools have worked to coordinate school vehicular and pedestrian traffic flow and communication. During the first weeks of school, Mason police and the City’s engineering team will be monitoring the construction area and making any adjustments that may be necessary.      

The City remains mindful of the upcoming school year and has intentionally built the academic calendar into the project schedule. Work such as sidewalks and curb ramps are timed for completion by August 10, except for those at the northwest corner – (WesBanco). To ensure safe pedestrian routes for students and families, no lane closures during school drop-off and pickup times.  Lane closures will occur during the hours of 8:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. Work will continue outside of the roadway.  Lane closures are necessary to complete the widening of the roadway and median, shared use paths, roadway resurfacing, installation of new traffic signals, installation of final landscaping, etc. Temporary school zone flashers and ongoing traffic signal monitoring are also in place to support smooth and safe travel during the transition into the new school year. The existing signals will be monitored and adjusted during the lane closures to assist with overall traffic flow. However, delays should be anticipated during the middle of the day, from the start of school until December.   

Pedestrian Access 

Students using shared use paths and sidewalks along Tylersville and Mason Montgomery Roads around this intersection will experience some temporary adjustments during construction. Please see map below that outlines proposed routes to and from school for students using the sidewalks and shared use paths.  The shared use path along the northeast corner adjacent to Mason Middle School will remain closed until project completion.  However, students can continue to access the Middle School at the corner of Mason Montgomery and Tylersville Road(See map).  Students should use the path via the Mason Intermediate School to avoid the construction zone(See map). Pedestrian crossing devices at the intersection of Mason Montgomery and Tylersville Road are operational and students are encouraged to use these devices when crossing through the intersection. 

The northwest corner near WesBanco will have substantial work throughout August and September, the sidewalk and shared use path in this area is anticipated to be completed by October. During this time, sections of the path and sidewalks will be closed, and cyclists may need to follow temporary detours or dismount in certain areas to navigate safely. Again, lane closures have been limited to the hours of 8:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. once school resumes. The City’s team will continue monitoring conditions and adjusting as needed to support safe and reliable travel for students.  

Milling and resurfacing work, implementation of the new signal and streetlighting work will occur beginning in October through November. The project is slated for substantial completion by December, weather permitting.   

As we settle into the first few weeks of school, we kindly ask parents and caregivers to be patient and gracious during dropoff and pickup times. Everyone, students, staff, bus drivers, and families—is adjusting to new routines, and your support truly helps the process go smoothly.
