MASON POLICE DEPARTMENT HOSTS PUBLIC FORUM AS PART OF ACCREDITATION PROCESS

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) will visit Mason on Sunday, March 11, 2018 for an on-site assessment of the Mason Police Department.

The Mason Police Department was first accredited in 1997 and has successfully been reaccredited every three years.  There are over 850 police agencies in Ohio and only 7% have been accredited.  To become accredited, the agency must comply with a minimum of 189 standards.  Accreditation is for three years, during which time the Police Department must submit annual reports to CALEA attesting to its continued compliance with those standards under which it was accredited.

As part of the assessment process the public is invited to attend a public information session taking place on Monday, March 12, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. at the Mason Community Center, located at 6050 Mason-Montgomery Road.  Individuals unable to attend can make comments by phone at 513.229.8566 on Monday, March 12, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.  Written comments can be mailed to Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320 Gainesville, Virginia 20155.  Telephone comments, as well as appearances at the public information session, are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards.

The assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar agencies outside of the State of Ohio.  The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and other locations in the community where compliance can be witnessed. Once the assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency is to be granted accredited status.  The assessment team leader will notify CALEA commissioners of the results of their on-site assessment visit.  A vote will be taken by the full Commission in July 2018 to determine if accredited status is to be awarded.
