Beat the Heat

While summer in Mason is typically filled with a variety of fun events and activities, it also is a time when extreme heat and inclement weather can occur. Mason Community Center lobby and Main Street area are open to the public and provides respite to individuals without air conditioning or other cooling mechanisms during extreme heat conditions. Mason Community Center is open Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

With high temperatures in the forecast, it’s important for community members to recognize the signs of heat-related illness and take the necessary steps to stay healthy and safe.

Know the signs of heat-related illness:

  • Heat Exhaustion: Heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache, cool/clammy skin.
  • Heat Stroke: High body temperature, confusion, rapid pulse, red/hot/dry skin and loss of consciousness. Heat stroke is a medical emergency. If you or someone you know are experiencing signs of a heat stroke, please call 9-1-1.

Tips to stay safe in extreme heat temperatures:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water.
  • Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors.
  • Never leave children or pets in vehicles.

High temperatures can pose serious health risks especially for the community’s elderly, young children and those with pre-existing conditions. Take a few moments to check on your neighbors and make sure that they are safe and have access to necessary resources such as water, fans or air conditioning. Your small act of kindness can help prevent heat-related illnesses while fostering a connected and compassionate community.
