Inclement Weather

Inclement Weather

Inclement weather conditions are anticipated throughout late autumn and winter. Mason residents are encouraged to be prepared, take precautions and stay informed.

Residents are encouraged to be patient during a winter weather event as snowplow drivers clear the roadways. Major thoroughfares are the City’s first priority followed by arterial roadways. Residents can assist with efficient snow and ice removal operations by shoveling snow to the right of the driveway as you are facing the street, as this will help eliminate snow from blocking the driveway when trucks are clearing snow from the roadway. Drivers are asked to remove vehicles from the roadway as well as avoid intentionally blocking a driveway with a vehicle. If significant snowfall occurs, it is often challenging for plow truck drivers to find a location to place the snow cleared from the roadway when a vehicle is in the street or blocking a driveway.

Community members are encouraged to demonstrate compassion by checking in with family, friends and neighbors to ensure everyone is staying safe and warm. Residents should especially be cognizant of elderly individuals – please reach out to make sure they have access to essential supplies such as food, water, medications, warm blankets and a battery powered radio. Please check an elderly individual’s home for potential hazards such as drafts and encourage them to stay indoors, wear layers of clothing and drink warm liquids. Check in on them regularly to monitor their wellbeing and provide companionship during inclement weather.

After a storm, residents are encouraged to help each other clear snow from driveways and sidewalks. Working together to clear the snow is a great way to get to know your neighbors, catch up on holiday stories, all while getting some excellent exercise!

The City of Mason’s Good Neighbor Trailer is a great way for neighbors to come together to help a resident in need. The Good Neighbor Trailer features common yard tools and equipment for community cleanups and service projects. Currently the Trailer is stocked with specific seasonal needs such as snow shovels and salt. Learn more about the Good Neighbor Trailer and how to reserve it by clicking here.

Extreme winter weather conditions increase the likelihood of power outages. If you experience a power outage during a winter weather event, report the outage on Duke Energy’s website by visiting www.duke-energy.com/outages or download the Duke Energy app on your smart phone. By downloading the app or visiting the website, you can also view the current outage map and estimated restoration times.

If you experience or see a fallen power line or safety hazard, please call 9-1-1. Residents should never touch a power line or anything in contact with it and should keep themselves and others away until professional help arrives.

Mason Community Center will serve as a warming center and refuge for community members without heat or power. For residents that are without heat or power yet are unable to travel to Mason Community Center for respite, please contact non-emergency dispatch at 513.695.2525 to connect with the City of Mason Fire Department. For emergency situations, please call 9-1-1.

Mason Community Center and Mason Municipal Aquatic Center will be updated through the City’s website, newsletters, and social media as conditions change during a winter weather event.

The City of Mason will monitor the weather forecast and conditions and will adjust facility operations and offerings as needed for the safety of members, guests and employees.

Winter storms create a higher risk of car accidents, hypothermia, frostbite, carbon monoxide poisoning and heart attacks from overexertion. Preparedness and caution is key to safely navigating hazardous winter weather conditions. Below are tips for staying safe during a snowstorm.

Before the Storm

  • Prepare Emergency Kits – Include blankets, batteries, a first-aid kit and extra clothing.
  • Stay Informed – Monitor weather updates through local news, radio, or emergency alerts.
  • Insulate Your Home – Seal windows and doors to keep heat in and cold out.

During the Storm

  • Stay Indoors – Avoid unnecessary travel to reduce the risk of getting into an accident or getting stranded.
  • Keep Warm – Dress in layers and use blankets to maintain body heat.
  • Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning – Never use generators, grilles, or camp stoves indoors.
  • Conserve Heat – Close off unused rooms and block drafts.
  • Limit Your Time Outside – If you need to go outside, then wear layers of warm clothing.
  • Check on Others – Contact family, friends, and neighbors, especially the elderly or those with special needs.

After the Storm

  • Clear Snow Safely – Shovel in short shifts and avoid overexertion to prevent heart strain.
  • Avoid Power Lines – Stay clear of downed power lines and report outages immediately.
  • Travel Cautiously – Wait until roads are cleared and deemed safe before driving.
