Safe Streets For All

Mason Introduces ‘Safe Streets for All’ Initiative

The City of Mason continues to invest in vehicular and pedestrian safety through its participation in the Safe Streets and Roads for All Grant Program

The safety of our roadway system remains a top priority for the City of Mason. In 2026 alone, the City of Mason is investing nearly $16 million to enhance Mason’s infrastructure for both drivers and pedestrians while proactively planning for future growth. The City’s investment in driver and pedestrian infrastructure improvements in 2026 is approximately 47% of the City’s total capital budget – a testament to the City’s ongoing commitment to creating a community where residents and guests can travel safety and confidently. Building on this strong foundation is the City of Mason’s participation in the Safe Streets for All (SS4A) federal grant program, which provides another opportunity to leverage additional resources to continue advancing roadway safety in the community.

In 2021, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) was passed by Congress, creating a new federal program aimed at funding regional, local, and tribal initiatives for transportation improvements from 2022 to 2026. Through federal grants, the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) initiative aims to improve roadway safety by significantly reducing and eventually eliminating roadway fatalities and serious injuries. This program focuses on the development of a comprehensive safety action plan for individual communities and its subsequent implementation to address the needs of all types of transportation system users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, public transportation users, motorists, personal mobility device users, and commercial vehicle operators. The federal program provides funding to assist communities in developing tools that strengthen a community’s approach to roadway safety.

The City of Mason submitted an SS4A program application and in July 2025 was awarded a grant. The funding will assist the City of Mason in strengthening its ongoing efforts to develop the City’s Safety Action Plan, a comprehensive strategic plan designed to enhance safety for pedestrian and vehicle travel throughout Mason. Development of this plan will open future opportunities to access additional grant funding to further Mason’s mission of enhancing safety through infrastructure improvements.

The City is working with a consultant, American Structurepoint, to develop a Safety Action Plan.  The development of the City’s Safety Action Plan includes meeting seven tenants:

  • Leadership Commitment and Goal Setting
  • Planning Structure
  • Safety Analysis
  • Engagement and Collaboration
  • Underserved Community Considerations
  • Policy and Process Changes
  • Strategy and Project Selections

We need your help! The City is asking for the community’s help in identifying potential areas of the City where improvements may be needed.  While roadway studies and traffic analysis are part of the City’s overall strategy for community safety, another component to enhance these strategies and provide a more comprehensive plan is input from residents and visitors who travel on roadways or use pedestrian pathways on a routine basis.  Community member feedback helps us understand how streets, intersections, and traffic patterns function in real life. Input from the people who walk, bike, and drive in the community every day, will help identify priorities and shape solutions that truly reflect the community’s needs.

The quality of responses will ensure that moving forward the City has the most comprehensive and relevant information available when making decisions about roadways and shared use paths. Once the comprehensive safety plan has been completed, factors such as additional planning, funding mechanisms, timing, engineering requirements, safety standards, and alignment with citywide priorities will be evaluated and considered before implementation. The City’s goal is to use the Safety Action Plan as a tool to secure federal funding opportunities to address issues that may be identified through this process.
